Black Ice Matters

Attention Students and Faculty of Mayville State University, as you know we are currently in our season of winter. Snowfall is expected to increase throughout the next month, but don’t worry there is a couple of warm days we can look forward to. As the first week of February has past us there have been countless numbers of people slipping and falling. No serious injuries have occurred, but with the little layer of snow we got this weekend some of the most popular icy spots have been covered by the snowfall.
Black ice tends to be in the places that have the heaviest amount of traffic during the day. Some of the popular spots would be the front side walk in front of Old Main Building, sidewalk splitting the Education building and Lewy Lee field house, the main parking lot of faculty in front of the café and library, also don’t forget the curve.
In front of Old Main, I asked a few Men’s football players who walk to practice at 5:30a.m in the morning how is their experience with the black ice. One says, “that it’s the only thing that wakes him up because there’s no time to be sleeping when you scared you’re going to fall.”
“The door everybody loves to use to cut through the gym, has had me on my “A” game so far. I use this short cut on occasion and I have seen the balance it takes from some of the Women’s basketball team.” Carleigh said “the one day I did not wear my no slips, I fell. I hardly never fall, but for some reason I was running late and was not watching where I was going and my book bag broke my fall.”
Our faculty parking lot is probably the most used route to get anywhere throughout the school. With the new black top that was placed over the summer, had a nice look during fall. “Who would have guessed that the black top would become an ice ring” said Arlyn Grace. This is the only entrance you have from the dorms to the café and it is a viral video waiting to be recorded on the scene.
The curve, if you live in the Berg Hall and also drive a vehicle you should know the fight of getting a spot right in front of the building. For a driver it is probably the best spot to get, as a passenger the chances of you slipping on the curve and ending up under the car has increased this winter. You would think all the snow piled up on the curve that this would be the safest route to the car.
